Trinamool Congress – brief history of the political party

Trinamool Congress or All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) was initially a regional party but now the party has expanded to other states also.

History behind the formation of Trinamool Congress

Mamata Banerjee, the Chairperson of Trinamool Congress started her political career in Indian National Congress. She came into lime light of national politics after defeating CPI (M) leader Somnath Chatterjee from Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency from Jadavpur in 1984. That win is the beginning of Mamata Banerjee as a leader and she was gaining popularity in state Congress also.

Congress expelled her from party on 22nd December 1997. Political observers have different opinions on her expulsion from Congress. Some believes that her strong anti CPI (M) stand was not welcomed by a strong lobby of state Congress. Anyway, Mamata Banerjee formed her own party, Trinamool Congress on 1 January 1998. At the initial stage of the party, maximum members were from Indian National Congress. Presently Trinamool Congress has gained popularity and their number of members has increased. Presently Trinamool Congress is a state political party in West Bengal, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam.
Symbol of Trinamool Congress is Jora Ghas Phool.
