Santragachi Jheel – the paradise for bird watchers


This article is about the location and main features of Santragachi Jheel.

Santragachi Jheel is located near the Santragachi railway station on Kona Expressway. Santragachi Jheel is nearly 10 km from Kolkata. It is a big lake surrounded by residential areas. Santragachi Jheel extends over 32 acres During the winter, this location becomes very attractive as a picnic spot near the city. Santragachi Jheel is owned and maintained by Indian railways and protected by the forest department. Migrant birds from Siberia, China, Russia and the Himalayas gather here during the winter to make the place more attractive. Santragachi Jheel is a paradise for bird watchers. Lesser Whistling Ducks are the main attractions here.


Presently the Santragachi Jheel is not in good shape. Modern civilization has affected the Jheel. Plastic and garbage are thrown in the Santragachi Jhee by the nearby residents. Slum areas have developed near the Jheel. Migratory birds are not coming like previous years. Immediate steps are needed to save Santragachi Jheel.
