Nabaneeta Dev Sen Dead



Novelist, children's author, poet and academic Nabaneeta Dev Sen is no more. After prolonged illness Nabaneeta Dev Sen died today (07 November 2019) at her own residence at 7.30 PM. She was 81. Nabaneeta Dev Sen was suffering from Cancer.

Nabaneeta Dev Sen was born in Kolkata and she was daughter of the poet-couple Narendra Dev and Radharani Devi. Nabaneeta Dev Sen married Amartya Sen and they are parents of two daughters, Antara Dev Sen and Nandana Sen. Nabaneeta Dev Sen and Amartya Sen were divorced in 1976. 

Nabaneeta Dev Sen lived in Kolkata, in her parental house Bhalo-Basa, where she was born.




Educational background of Nabaneeta Dev Sen


Nabaneeta Dev Sen graduated from Presidency College and received her master's degree from Jadavpur University, Calcutta. She then took a Masters with Distinction from Harvard University. She earned her PhD from Indiana University. She then completed her post-doctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley and Newnham College, Cambridge University.

She was a University Grants Commission Senior Fellow at University of Delhi.


In addition to Bengali and English, she reads Hindi, Oriya, Assamese, French, German, Sanskrit, and Hebrew.

In 2002, Nabaneeta Dev Sen retired as Professor of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University, Calcutta. 



Nobel laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee visited Nabaneeta Dev Sen’s house on 24 October 2019.
