Durga Puja starts with Mahalaya. On 2012, Mahalaya is on 15 October morning. Different TV channels have organized programs on Mahalaya which are as follows:

ETV Bangla channel will will telecast Mahishasurmardini dance drama from 4.55 hours. Bengali actress Debasree Roy will play the role of Maa Durga. The same channel will telecast a Mahalaya special program at 18.30 hours on the same day. Eminent singers like Sreekumar Chattopadhyay, Haimanti Shukla, Lopamudra Mitra, Arindam Ganguly, Jojo will be present in the programs with their songs.

This year music composers of Kolkata are busy on recording Durga Puja music for different Puja pandals. This article is on theme songs of this year Durga Puja.

During the golden age of Bengali songs, ‘Pujar Gaan’ was very famous. Music lovers used to wait for the whole year for the songs of famous Bengali singers. Gradually the situation changed. In recent Durga Pujas, nobody seems to be very eager about ‘Pujar Gaan’.

This year in Durga Puja 2011, a new trend can be found in Puja pandals. Many Durga Puja committees have tied up with top composers to record Durga Puja theme songs for them.

 Theme songs of Suruchi Sangha

 Noted music composer, Jeet Ganguli is composing theme songs for Suruchi Sangha of Kolkata. Suruchi Sangha is famous for their variations in theme of Durga Puja. This year Suruchi Sangha is going to set a new trend in Durga Puja of West Bengal. Suruchi Sangh’s this year theme is Kashmir as a backdrop for the pandal and focuses on the fight against pollution, global warming, the glacial thaw etc. Jeet Ganguli is working on eight to tem themes and he wants the club members to sing the songs. During the Durga Puja days, these songs will be playing in the Puja pandals and the women members of the club will show live performance with the songs.

  Theme songs of Tollygunge Udayan Club

Another famous music composer, Debajyoti Mishra is composing Durga Puja theme songs for Tollygunge Udayan Club for their Puja in 2011. As per Debajyoti Mishra, lot of string instruments like the violin and cello will be used in the theme songs of Tollygunge Udayan Club. In the theme songs, Durga stotra will be recited by members of his choir.
