Jnanpith Award for Bengali Poet Shankha Ghosh



Bengali Poet Shankha Ghosh will be awarded with Jnanpith Award in 2016. Shankha Ghosh is the 6th Bengali poet / novelist to receive this award. The others are: Tarashankar Bandopadhyay (1966), Bishnu Dey (1971), Ashapurna Devi (1976), Subhash Mukhopadhyay (1991) and Mahasweta Devi (1996).

Shankha Ghosh is one of the leading poets of West Bengal in recent times. Shankha Ghosh is a respectable poet and at the same time he is a powerful critic of political parties. On many occasions, Shankha Ghosh raised his voice against the ruling party and opposition parties. Shankha Ghosh never hesitates to criticize any political activities of any political parties.

Date of birth of Shankha Ghosh: 6 February 1932


Place of birth of Shankha Ghosh: Chandpur, presently in Bangladesh

Education of Shankha Ghosh: Completed his graduation in Arts in Bengali from Presidency College, Kolkata. Master’s degree from University of Calcutta.

Shankha Ghosh was associated with many colleges and university as a teacher. Shankha Ghosh  taught at Bangbashi College, City College and Jadavpur University. Shankha Ghosh was associated with Delhi University, Indian Institute of Advanced Studies at Shimla, Visva Bharati University. Shankha Ghosh retired from Jadavpur University in 1992.

Shankha Ghosh died on 21 April 2021.
