Shantiniketan, located about 180 km north of Kolkata is a world famous town near Bolpur. It was the home town of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore whose presence is felt in every sphere of life, especially of Bengalis. Meaning of Santiniketan is 'abode of peace'. Initially this town was known as Bhubandanga, named after a local dacoit. In 1863, Devendranath Tagore established an ashram here, people from all over the world of all religions used to come here for meditation and prayer. The name was changed from Bhubandanga to Shantinekatan by the Tagore family. On 22 December 1901, Rabindranath opened a school here where system of education was totally changed from conventional style to our ancient gurukul style. After he received the Nobel Prize, the school was converted in to a university Visva Bharati in 1921. Rabindranath Tagore established university Visva Bharati is a prestigious university now where students from all over the country and abroad are coming for education.

Poush Mela in Shantiniketan is a great festival which starts normally in the last week of December very year and continues for three days. How to reach Shantiniketan – transport services
How to reach Shantiniketan is not a problem to day. Bolpur is the nearest railway station to Santiniketan, just 2 km away. Bolpur is connected to Kolkata by many express trains.
Many trains from Hawrah and Sealdah are available to reach Bolpur. Shantiniketan Express, Howrah-Bolpur Shantiniketan Express, Hawrah-Jamalpur Express, Sealdah-Mughalsarai Express, Kanchenjunga Express, Danapur Express, Vishwabharati Fast Passanger and Tarapith Passanger are the major trains available to reach Shantiniketan.
Buses are also available through Panagarh route.
