Suchitra Mitra – the legend Rabindra Sangeet singer


Suchitra Mitra (September 19, 1924 – January 3, 2011) was a living legend of Rabindra Sangeet. Suchitra Mitra is the anonymous of Rabindra Sangeet. Bengali culture is incomplete without Rabindra sangeet. More and more people are seeking shelter in Randra Sangeet today.  The singers who have dedicated their lives to for Rabindra Sangeet, Suchitra Mitra is one of them.  She was former sheriff of Kolkata in 2001. After prolonged illness she died of a cardiac ailment on January 3, 2011, in his residence.

Early life of Suchitra Mitra


Date of Birth: September 19, 1924.  Litterateur Saurindra Mohan Mukherjee was a close associate of the Tagore family was the father of Suchitra Mitra. Suchitra Mitra's first Rabindra Sangeet guru was Pankaj Mallick. From her childhood, Suchitra Mitra had a great passion for Rabindra Sangeet.  Education: Initially at Scottish Church College then University  of Calcutta and Viswa Bharati.

Suchitra Mitra used to sing from core of the heart. Presence of Rabindranath was in every corner of her life. Bengal will never forget her Tagore songs,  songs in Dance Dramas / Rabindra Nritya Natya and Tagore songs in Bengali movies. she has acted and danced in many Rabindra Nritya Natya. She recorded 416 Rabindra Sangeet, 5 Rabindra Sangeet for Bengali movies and 17 modern Bengali songs. It is impossible to mention any particular song of Suchitra Mitra but ‘Krishnakoli aami taarei boli’ without Suchitra Mitra is unthikable.  Suchitra Mitra recorded many Atul Prasad and Dwijendralal Roy and modern Bengali songs. She was a member of  Indian Peoples Theatre (IPTA) for several years.  She had interest in acting also. She was influenced by legend Bengali cinema personalities like Pramathesh Barua, Debaki Basu, Sisir Kumar Bhaduri. Few years back she acted in Rituparno Ghosh's Bengali movie Dahan.


Suchitra Mitra and Viswa Bharati


Pankaj Mallick was the first guru of Suchitra Mitra in Rabindra Sangeet. She joined Sangeet Bhavan of Viswa Bharati just after the death of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, 20 days after the death.. At Sangeet Bhavan she got the guidance of  Indiradebi, Shantidev Ghosh and Shailajaranjan Mazumdar. Her first Rabindra Sangeet recording was released on 1945.  She joined Rabindra  Bharati University as a lecturer and afterwards she was head of the Department of music.

Desikottama from Viswa Bharati  5. Allauddin Puraskar from West Bengal government  6. HMV Golden Disc Award.  7. D.Litt.degrees by the Rabindra Bharati University, Burdwan University and Jadavpur University.
