Bishnupur is a town of Bankura district. This town is different from other places with its own culture and craft. Any discussion on Bankura district without Bishnupur is impossible. Bishnupur is famous for its terracotta temples, terracotta crafts and Baluchari silk sarees. In Hindustani classical music, Bishnupur Gharana has its own place. Bishnupur, the' town of temples' is situated at 38 Km from Bankura town- 138 km from Kolkata is considered as one of the most important tourist spots of Bankura.

Few words about the history of Bishnupur

For long time Bishnupur was under the Malla rulers. It was the capital of the Malla Kings. That’s why this place is also known as Mallabhum. The Vaishanav Malla rulers built the famous terracotta temples here during the 17th and 18th Century. Since then the terracotta style of art charms tourists from different parts of India, even from outside India. 

How to reach Bishnupur-transport services

Being a famous tourist attractions spot, Bishnupur is well connected with other towns via bus and train service. Buses are available from major towns like Asansol, Burdwan, Kolkata, Durgapur etc in regular intervals. By train one can go to Bishnupur via Kharagpur and Bankura.

Major temples to visit

Bishnupur is considered as town of temples. These temples are one of the main attractions of Bishnupur to the tourists. There are so many temples in Bishnupur. 

Rasmancha:  This famous oldest brick temple was built in late 16th Century by King Beera Hambira. 

Jorebangla Temple of Keshta Roy: This finest temple in Bishnupur with extra ordinary terracotta architecture in inner and outer walls was by 

King Raghunath Singha Dev II in the 17th century. 

Malleshwar temple:  The temple was built by Bir Singh in 1622. 

Shyamchand temple was built in 1640.

ShyamRai temple was built in 1643 by Raghunath Singh . 

Kalachand temple: It was built by Raghunath Singh in 1656. 

Madan-Mohan temple: This temple was built by Durjan Singh in 1694. 

Radha-Gobinda temple: It was built by Krishna Singh in 1729. 

Other famous temples are Sarbamangala temple, Sanreswar temple, Radhalaljiu temple, Madangopal temple, Chhinnamasta Temple.

Bahulara - 25 km. from Bishnupur, Famous Siddheswar Siva temple is located here 

Dihar – 8 km from Bishnupur, famous for Saileswar temple. 

Panchmura – about 10 km from Bishnupur,  This village is world famous for terracotta horses.
