B.B.D. Bagh – a historical place in Kolkata

Read this article to know about B.B.D.Bagh, the history associated with this place.
B.B.D.Bagh was formerly known as Dalhousie Square. On 19th November of 1969, the name was changed from Dalhousie Square to B.B.D. Bagh. The name, B.B.D.Bagh is associated with Benoy, Badal and Dinesh – three brave sons of West Bengal during the independence struggle of India. The most interesting about the name B.B.D.Bagh is that the new name of Dalhousie Square has been accepted by people spontaneously. Today the location is known as B.B.D.Bagh only and not as Dalhousie Square which is not the case with others. For example, still today Howrah Bridge is not known as Rabindra Setu.

B. B. D. Bagh is the heart of Kolkata with many famous offices, banks and historical buildings. B.B.D.Bagh
is the seat of power of the state government and the main commercial area of Kolkata as well as West Bengal. Local name of B.B.D.Bagh is office para in Bengali which means locality of offices.

The major landmark buildings in B.B.D.Bagh are:

The Writer’s Building secretariat of West Bengal.

Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

General Post Office in Kolkata.

Telephone Bhawan

St. John's Church

Tea Board

Lal Dighi

B.B.D.Bagh is the busiest area in Kolkata with huge number of offices. There is hardly any residential building in B.B.D.Bagh. During the day time this area is overcrowded as people are coming here from different parts of the state for their livelihood. Another unique feature in B.B.D.Bagh is the cheap and hygienic food available in this area.
