Varieties of Mango produced in West Bengal



Mango, the national fruit of India is called ‘king of fruits’ also. It is one of the important and tasty fruit of India. In this article you will find different varieties of Mangoes produced in West Bengal with short details of the fruit.


Mango is one of the most famous and tasty fruits of India. States like Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharastra etc produces huge mangoes every year. India is the top mango producing country in the world. In West Bengal, varieties of mangoes are produced and Bengalis are very fond of this fruit. Through out the summer season, mango in lunch and dinner is a must item for many Bengalis.


The tropical and subtropical climate is required for the growth of mangoes. In West Bengal districts like Murshidabad, Maldaha, Nadia produce huge varieties of mango. Some of the varieties are Himsagar, Amrapali, Fazli, Lkshman Bhog, Gulab Khas, Kishen Bhog, Langra.


Bombai: It is known as Bombai or Malda in West Bengal. This variety of mango is of medium sized, round shaped yellow coloured fruit which comes in market in the early season.


Himsagar: Himsagar is a medium size fruit and the fruit colour is yellow. This variety of mango is very sweet and tasty and the first variety of mango with good quality to reach the West Bengal market is Himsagar.


Kishen Bhog: This variety of mango is produced in Murshidabad district. It’s a medium size round shaped yellow colour fruit and comes in market in the mid season.


Langra: This variety of mango is grown more in northern India but Maldaha langra also comes in market in the mid season. It’s a round shaped, medium size, lettuce green colour fruit.


Fazli: This variety of mango is produced in Maldaha dstrict of West Bengal and many other states in India. The size of this variety is very big and the colour of the fruit is green. It comes in the market at the end of mango season and this mango is not very tasty.

Lkshman Bhog, Gulab Khas etc are produced in Murshidabad.


Mangoes of West Bengal are now getting international market. Himsagar, Langra, Laxmanbhog are being exported to London, Singapore, Malaysia and the demand is increasing.
