Amala Shankar is mother-in-law of Tanusree Shankar and Amala Shankar is sister-in-law of great sitarist Ravi Shankar.Amala Shankar was born in 1919. At the age of eleven, Amala Shankar went to Paris with her father where she met Uday Shankar. Uday Shankar was in Europe tour with his dance troup and Amala Shankar became a member of the troup. In 1942, Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar got married.
Gradually Amala Shankar became a great dancer. After the death of Uday Shankar the ‘Shankar Gharana continues through her and her daughter Mamata Shankar and daughter-in-law Tanushree Shankar. Son ananda Shankar was a music composer and musician who blended eastern and western music perfectly.
Untimely death of Ananda Shankar was a blow on Amala Shankar but she overcome the tragedy and enjoying every moment of her life.
