The Zika virus and India
Zika virus is spread by the aedes species of
mosquito which usually bites during daylight hours. This type of mosquito that
transmits dengue fever and chikungunya.
Symptons of Zica Virus
The illness is similar to dengue fever and is
generally mild and self-limiting, lasting four to seven days. About 1 in 5
people infected with Zika virus will develop symptoms, which include fever,
rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis.
Why Zica Virus is so serious?
Zika virus has a connection between the virus and
microcephaly, a neurological disorder that results in babies being born with
abnormally small heads. This causes severe developmental issues and sometimes
death.
Countries affected by the Zika virus
The countries affected currently by the Zika virus are
Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador,
El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras,
Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, Suriname,
Samoa, the US Virgin Islands and Venezuela.
Protection from Zica virus
There is no vaccine for Zika so protect yourself
from mosquito bites.
The only time any trace of the zica virus was
recorded in India was in 1952-53.
