This Kiriteshwari temple at Kiriteshwari of Murshidabad has been discussed many times as an example of communal harmony in Bengal. This time (21 September 2023) Kiriteshwari has been nominated as the 'Best Tourist Village' by the Union Ministry of Tourism.
The temple is located in Kiriteshwari village, five kilometers from Dahpara railway station in Murshidabad. It is said that Sati's crown fell there. That is why the goddess is also called as 'Mukuteshwari'. This temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peetha. According to history, the ancient temple of Devi collapsed in 1405. After that in the 19th century, King Darpanarayan Roy of Lalgola built a new temple. Later, a section of local Muslims donated land for the temple. On the occasion of Mahamaya puja during Bengali month Poush (December), a fair is held on that land of the temple premises. Muslims are in charge of organizing.
