A new Bengali film titled Gungun Kore Mahua is being produced by Rana Sarkar. In this film, actor Tathagata Mukherjee will portray the legendary Uttam Kumar. The actor himself has confirmed the news.
He shared, “Portraying an extraordinary artist like Uttam Kumar on screen is not merely acting for me—it carries a deep emotional responsibility and a sense of reverence. His distinct personality, the subtle elegance of his performances, and the fine layers of emotion he expressed—keeping all of that in mind, I’ve tried to rediscover him in Gungun Kore Mahua. I believe it’s impossible to imitate him exactly. Instead, my aim was to internalize his feelings and essence and convey that to the audience. Throughout this journey, I’ve tried to present a fresh interpretation while maintaining utmost respect for him. I’ve sincerely attempted to capture the unique grace and dignity that defined him as the ‘Mahanayak’.”
Meanwhile, Rana Sarkar has already shared a picture from the shoot featuring Tathagata on social media. Although his face isn’t clearly visible in the image, a closer look reveals that he is seated in the look of Uttam Kumar. Even without prior knowledge, one can easily guess it’s Tathagata in that appearance. For the past few days, shooting has been taking place at a house near the Hedua area in North Kolkata. At the beginning, some issues arose with the crew members, prompting a press conference at the IMPA office by Rana Sarkar and IMPA president Pia Sengupta. The matter was later resolved through the mediation of Federation president Swaroop Biswas. Since last Saturday, shooting has resumed in full swing, and Tathagata’s portions were completed that day.
The film is directed by Rajdeep Ghosh, with the story and screenplay written by Arkadeep Mallika Nath. When Mahua Roychowdhury entered the film industry, Uttam Kumar was at the peak of his career and served as a guiding figure in the industry. Various interviews suggest that after her marriage to Tilak Chakraborty, Mahua, along with her friends, visited Uttam Kumar’s house, where they spent time eating, chatting, and enjoying themselves.
Notably, actress Ankita Mallick will play the role of Mahua in the film. Additionally, Dibyani Mondal will portray Mahua in her younger days. It is also reported that actor Loknath Dey may appear as Mahua’s father, Nilanjan Roychowdhury.
