Debashree Roy is an Indian actress, dancer, choreographer, politician and animal rights activist.  As an actress, she is known for her work in Hindi and Bengali cinema. After the death of Mahua Roychowdhury, she became queen of Bengali commercial cinema. Debashree has won over forty awards, including a National Award, three BFJA Awards, five Kalakar Awards and an Anandalok Award.

Unishe April (1994)

 Directed by Rituparno Ghosh. Aparna Sen, Debashree Roy, Dipankar Dey, Chitra Sen were main characters in the film which potrays a sentimental mother daughter relation. Debashree is the daughter and Aparna Sen played the role of mother.




Bhalobasa Bhalobasa (1985)

Bhalobasa Bhalobasa is a 1985 Bengali romantic film directed by Tarun Majumdar. The film stars Tapas Paul and Debashree Roy.

Asukh (1999)

 Directed by Rituparno Ghosh. With Soumitra Chatterjee, Debashree Roy, Arpita Chatterjee, Gouri Ghosh.

This National Award winning film (Best Feature Film in Bengali) follows two parallel narratives. The present portrays Rohini (brilliantly essayed out by Debashree Roy), a renowned actress who is an emotionally vulnerable and addicted to sleeping pills. She is trying to cope with her mother’s illness but ends up forming a subtle schism with her father (Soumitra Chatterjee). Flashbacks, on the other hand, highlight the slow disintegration relationship with her fiancĂ© as he gets involved with a younger upcoming actress, which ends up clarifying her present vulnerability. 

Troyee (1982)


Troyee is a 1982 Bengali romantic drama film written and directed by Gautam Mukherjee. The screenplay was written by Parthapratim Choudhury.

This was a commercially hit movie.


36 Chowringhee Lane (1981)

36 Chowringhee Lane is a 1981 film written and directed by Aparna Sen and produced by Shashi Kapoor. It marked the directorial debut of Sen, who had until then been known as a leading actress of Bengali cinema. The film was very well received upon release. It stars Jennifer Kendal in a critically acclaimed role, along with Dhritiman Chatterjee and Debashree Roy.

36 Chowringhee Lane is one of a handful of Indian films portraying the life and culture of a fast-dwindling minority community, the Anglo-Indians, in India.


Dekha (2001)

Dekha was released on 2001 Bengali film starring Anjan Dutta, Soumitra Chatterjee, Debasree Roy, Indrani Halder, Rupa Ganguly, Biplab Chatterjee, Suman Deb, Haradhan Banerjee, Kamal Kanjilal. The Bengali film is directed by Goutam Ghose. Abhijeet Bose scored the music in the film.

The film revolves around an aging poet Sashi Bhusan Sanyal afflicted with glaucoma and nearly blind whose wife has deserted him because of his reckless lifestyle.


Lathi (1996)

Lathi is a 1996 Bengali family drama film directed by Prabhat Roy. The Film stars Victor Banerjee as the protagonist. It also stars Soumitra Chatterjee, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Debashree Roy, Satabdi Roy, Haradhan Bandopadhyay, Abhishek Chatterjee, Pallavi Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta, Deepankar De, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and Kaushik Sen. The music of the film has been composed by Bappi Lahiri.

Plot of the film revolves around Atindranath Bannerjee, a retired teacher, faces harassment from his family members and decides to discipline them.

Dadar Kirti (1980)

Dadar Kirti is a 1980 Bengali romantic drama film directed by Tarun Majumdar. The film was based on an unpublished novel of the same name by Saradindu Bandopadhyay. It stars Tapas Paul, Mahua Roychowdhury, Ayan Banerjee, Debashree Roy, Sandhya Roy, Kali Banerjee, Ruma Guha Thakurta and Anup Kumar. Tapas Paul made his debut with this film.

The film attained a huge box office success upon its release and still has a popular following.

Although the film is famous for excellent performance by Mahua and Tapas Paul, Debashree Roy is also  remembered for her cute performance of Mahua's younger sister.

Thikana (1991)


Directed by Inder Sen. With Arjun Chakraborty, Dipankar Dey, Debashree Roy, Moon Moon Sen.

Debashree Roy was conferred with BFJA Award for Best Actress (1992) for the first time for her performance in Indar Sen's Bengali film Thikana.


Teesta (2005)


Director : Bratya Bose
Cast       : Debasree Roy, Chandreye Ghosh, Badha Moitra, Pijush Ganguly and others.

The film is based on the relationship between a woman and a man, and about miscommunication. 

Cocooned in the hilly wrap of Kalimpong, divorcee schoolteacher Teesta (Debasree Roy) feels she can't communicate with people any more. She speaks to the mountains instead, and even when a much younger man (Badshah Moitra) tries to ignite her passion, she remains aloof. Her second marriage is on the rocks.

Rose Valley scam and Top Tollywood actress

Who is the top Tollywood Bengali films actress involved in Rose Valley scam? Is she linked with any political party? It is expected that very soon we will come to know about the actress.

Latest hot news in Rose Valley scam and Tollywood is that a top Tollywood actress had allegedly enabled transactions worth Rs 350 crore from a Singapore-based firm through Hawala channels for Rose Valley.

It is said that the actress went with prime accused and Rose Valley owner Gautam Kundu on several foreign trips and enabled him to buy and sell several Bengali films. The actress will soon be summoned by the CBI for interrogation.

A source said “Movements of the actress were closely monitored for the past three years. All the evidences proving her involvement in the scam were carefully knit together to make the case fool-proof, considering the mass following and political clout of the actress.”

Tollywood actresses like Sandhya Roy, Shatabdi Roy are Trinamool Congress MPs and Debashree Roy is Trinamool Congress MLA. 

Another top Bengali actress is Rituparna Sengupta, although she is not directly involved in politics but she has a connection with Singapore. Rituparna Sengupta's husband, Sanjay Chakraborty resides in Singapore. It is heard that CBI will summon one top Bengali Tollywood actress in connection with Rose Valley scam and rumour is that the actress's husband resides in Singapore. Sources close to the CBI revealed that  the actress enabled transactions worth 350 crore from a Singapore-based firm through hawala channels for Rose Valley. As soon as the actress got the news that CBI is getting ready to summon her, she is planning to leave India. CBI has taken the appropriate steps so that Visa is not granted to the actress. CBI has informed all the airports in the country with the passport number of the actress so that the actress can not leave the country.

Latest update is that CBI is keeping close watch on three Tollywood actresses related to Rose Valley scam. One is a top Bengali actress with Singapore link, the second actress is also a popular actress of Bengali films. The second actress has worked mainly in second lead roles in films and the third actress works both in Tollywood and Bollywood. It is also said that the third actress has recently joined a political party.

Another Bengali actress is expected to be linked with Rose Valley scam. The actress is known for acting in bold scenes in both Bengali and Bollywood films. The unmarried actress is supposed to tie the knot this year and her would be husband resides in other state.

Divorce and Bengali film actresses



Divorce is very common in case of Bengali film actresses. Many actresses whose life style is so sober and there is no information of any kind of extra maritial relationship between the actress and somebody else, still divorce happens in Tollywood.

Sandhya Roy is a mother like figure in Bengali film industry. The lady with a god gifted beauty was married to filmmaker Tarun Majumdar. Tarun Majumdar, popular as Tanu babu in his own circle is an eminent film director. Tarun Majumder and Sandhya Roy are not husband wife now.

Debashree Roy is in the glamour world from her childhood. Debashree Roy was married to her long time boyfriend Prosenjit Chatterjee in year 1992. At that time they were considered as made for each other celebrity couple but their married life ended with divorce in year 1995. After the divorce, Prosenjit married Aparna Guhathakurta in 1997 and they took divorce on 2002 and the third marriage of Prosenjit is with Arpita Pal in 2002. Debashree Roy is still single.

Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee was married to Promit Sen in 1998. Promit Sen is the son of renowned Rabindrasangeet exponent Sagar Sen.  The marriage ended with high drama in court room. Swastika is now living her own life with her daughter.

In year 2013, Sreelekha Mitra took separation from her husband. Sreelekha Mitra and her ex-husband have a daughter who is now staying with her mother.


In early '90s Bengali actress Roopa Ganguly got married with Dhruba Mukherjee, a Mechanical Engineer. Roopa and Dhruba have a son, Akash. Roopa Ganguly was very much unhappy in her married life and she tried to kill herself thrice. In 2007, Rupa Ganguly and Dhruva Mukherjee started to live separately and in January 2009 Rupa Ganguly divorced Dhruba Mukherjee.



The latest addition is the divorce of young Bengali actress Srabanti Chatterjee. Srabanti’s lawyer has send divorce letter to Rajib Biswas – Srabanti’s director husband. Srabanti and Rajib have a son of nine years old who is staying with his mother.

Dipta and Ridhdhi are husband wife. Dipta and Ridhdhi used to date each other before marriage and their marriage is a love marriage. Both Dipta and Ridhdhi works in corporate house.
