Sandip Ray’s Much-Anticipated Feluda Film Hatyapuri And New Feluda

 Sandip Ray has started his new Feluda film Hatyapuri. The detective thriller introduces Indraneil Sengupta as the Bengali sleuth, while Ayush Das and Abhijit Guha will be seen as  Topse and Jatayu, respectively.

Sandip Ray’s last Feluda film ‘Double Feluda’ was made in 2016 with Sabyasachi Chakraborty playing the detective for the last time. 

“Hatyapuri revolves around a murder mystery in Puri, a place my father always loved to visit. This film has some interesting twists, while the supporting characters also play key roles in the narrative," shared Sandip Ray.

‘Hatyapuri’ will also see Paran Bandopadhyay, Subhasish Mukherjee, Saheb Chatterjee and Bharat Kaul in important roles. Paran Bandopadhyay has appeared in all of Sandip Ray’s Feluda directorials since ‘Bombaiyer Bombete’ (2003) and the director wanted to rope in all those actors who have acted in his previous Feluda films.

Abhijit Guha playing Lalmohan Ganguly aka Jatayu is another important decision. Satyajit Ray himself didn’t make any Feluda films when he couldn’t find a suitable actor for Jatayu after Santosh Dutta's death. Incidentally, Bibhu Bhattacharya, who played the iconic character in Sandip Ray's films, also passed away in 2011.

“Feluda films without Jatayu became the main focus and we were used to it but then my wife (Lalita Ray) urged me to have a look at Abhijit for the role. We all have watched his acting for years, and her suggestion somehow gave me the confidence to choose him as Jatayu,” Sandip Ray said.

Bengali Film Professor Shanku O El Dorado

First ever film on Satyajit Ray's creation Professor Shanku will be released in 2019 Christmas. The film is ‘Professor Shanku O El Dorado’ where Dhritiam Chatterjee plays the titular character of Professor Shanku, Subhasish Mukhopadhyay will be seen as Nokurbabu. 

Director Sandip Ray said, “This is the first time we are bringing my father’s creation Professor Shanku alive on screen and I’m very excited about the same. Shanku is a larger than life literary character that is known across the world and I’m hoping that the audience will love the film as much as they loved literary Shanku.”

Dhritiman Chatterjee said “The main problem was to adjust Shonku to the modern world as time and surroundings of Shonku have changed completely. I have to play the character keeping in mind every minute detail mentioned in the original stories. But I am also thankful to Sandip Ray for giving me the opportunity to enact such an iconic character.” 

‘Professor Shanku O El Dorado’ also stars American actors Paolo Ricardo Xavier, Roney Facchini and Fernando Borges De Souza among others.

Expected Hit Upcoming Bengali Films in 2014

Year 2013 has witnessed many hit Bengali films. 2014 has just started and expectation from Bengali films has increased. Here is the list of some of the films which are expected to be hit movies in year 2014.

 Opentee Bioscope: Bengali film Opentee Bioscope is produced by Shoojit Sircar and Anindya Chattopadhyay of Bengali band Chandrabindoo is directing the film. Actor and actresses of the film are Riddhi Sen, Surangana, Rajatava Dutta, Sohini Sarkar and others.

Badshahi Angti: It's a Feluda series movie by Sandip Ray and audiences will find a new Feluda. Abir Chatterjee for the first time will play the role of Feluda in Badshahi Angti and his performance will definitely be compared with Soumitra Chatterjee and Sabyasachi Chakraborty.

Apur Panchali: Kaushik Ganguly has successfully created a platform for himself in Bengali film industry. After film Shabdo expectation from the director has increased like anything. Film Apur Panchali is based on the life of Subir Banerjee, the child actor who played Apu in Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali. Other actors in Apur Panchali are Parambrata Chatterjee, Parno Mittra, Ritwick Chakraborty, Ardhendu Banerjee, Gaurav Chakrabarty and others.

Kolkata Calling: For the first time Moon Moon Sen will be seen on screen with her daughters Riya, Raima in a film.

Magadhera: Dev and Raj Chakraborty will work together after a long gap in film Magadhera which is a remake of the 2009 Telugu film. Dev is now a box office hit hero in Bengali films and the actor – director pair has presented many hit films earlier.

Boss 2: Jeet and Subhashree Ganguly will be seen together very soon in film Boss 2. The fate of Jeet - Subhashree pair is largely depending on the box office report of the film.

Sesh Bole Kichhu Nei:  Sesh Bole Kichhu Nei is a Anjan Dutta film with Subhashree Ganguly in the lead female role. Subhashree’s career graph will get a boost up if she performs well in this film.

Jaatishwar: Srijit Mukherji-Prosenjit Chatterjee jodi will be seen in the classic film Antony Firingee where Uttam Kumar was casted in the title role. Kabir Suman has composed some classic numbers for the film. Other actors in the film are Swastika Mukherjee, Riya Sen, Rahul.

Buno Haash: Story of the film is based on a novel of Samaresh Majumdar and Dev, Srabanti, Tanusree Chakraborty, Moon Moon Sen, Gargi Roychoudhury are casted in the film.

Arundhuti: This is a remake of a Telegu film with Koel Mallick as a 19th century warrior queen. Koel will be seen in action scenes.

Chatuskone : Director Srijit Mukherji has casted directors like Aparna Sen, Goutam Ghose, Kaushik Gongopadhyay, Sujoy Ghosh in this film as actors. Prosenjit, Parambrata and chiranjit may also act in the film.

Aamir Khan may play the role of Feluda in Hindi version of Sonar Kella

Satyajit Ray's classic film Sonar Kella may be remake in Hindi and filmmaker Shoojit Sarkar is planning for it. Shoojit Sarkar is thinking of casting Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan in the role of Feluda.

Feluda series films are very popular in West Bengal. Satyajit Ray made number of Bengali films on Feluda and now his son Sandip Ray is also making films on Feluda. In Satyajit Ray’s films on Feluda, Soumitra Chatterjee played the role of Feluda and another Bengali actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty was Feluda in Sandip Ray’s films. Abir Chatterjee has replaced Sabyasachi as Feluda from next film of Sandip Ray. Actually Sabyasachi Chakraborty himself thought that his present age is not suitable for Feluda.

If Shoojit Sarkar’s planning is materialized, Indian cinema will get another Feluda.

Sandip Ray and his upcoming film Badshahi Angti and Professor Shanku

Bengali film audiences are aware that Sabyasachi Chakraborty will no more act as Feluda in Feluda series films. Sabyasachi Chakraborty has taken such decision due his age. New Feluda is Abir Chatterjee. Shooting of Badshahi Angti will start at the end of this year. Main location of shooting will be Lucknow. The other actors are yet to be finalized.

After completing Badshahi Angti, Sandip Ray will start another film and that will be on famous Professor Shanku. In the film of Professor Shanku, modern technology will play a vital role. The location of shooting and actors are not yet finalized although Sandip Ray thinks wants Bengali actor in the role of Professor Shanku. Shooting of Professor Shanku may start from November 2014.

Next Feluda film is Badshahi Angti with Abir Chatterjee as Feluda

Director Sandip Ray recently said that in 2014 he will start shooting of next Feluda series film and it is almost certain that Abir Chatterjee will be the next Feluda.  So we can expect that Abir will make his debut as Feluda in 2014 and the film is going to be Badshahi Angti.

After latest Feluda series film – Royal Bengal Rahasya it was heard that Sabyasachi Chakraborty has acted in the role of Feluda for the last time and the director is searching for next Feluda. From that time the name of Abir Chatterjee was in the air and Sandip Ray needs a Jatayu also as Bibhu Chakraborty died after Royal Bengal Rahasya. In the story of Badshahi Angti, there is no Jatayu.

Abir Chatterjee is also eagerly waiting for the day when the contract will be signed and the shooting will start. The story of Badshahi Angti is based on Lucknow and shooting will be done in the older parts of Lucknow.

Abir Chatterjee is the next Feluda in Feluda series films of Sandip Ray

Last Feluda series Bengali film ‘Royal Bengal Rahasya’ was released last year during Christmas. Bengali actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty played the role of Feluda in the film and he has portrayed the role of Feluda from 2003 to 2011. After the release of Royal Bengal Rahasya, Sabyasachi Chakraborty announced that he would be no more Feluda in any Feluda series movie as his present age will not match the detective role.

Since then Bengali audiences were waiting for the next Feluda and it seems that the search for next Feluda is over. Sandip Ray and producer Venkatesh Groups have talked with Abit Chatterjee and latest news is that Abir Chatterjee is agree to play as Feluda in next Feluda series movie of Sandip Ray. Abir Chatterjee is a well-known face in Bengali films after blockbuster hit ‘Kahaani’ and ‘Jekhane Bhooter Bhoi’. Jekhane Bhooter Bhoi is directed by Sandip Ray and the film is released in this Christmas. Abir Chatterjee has already acted in the role of ditective – Byomkesh Bakshi in Anjan Dutta films.

Sandip ray confirmed that the next Feluda series movie will be ‘Badshahi Angthi’ although he does not know if it will be possible to release the movie by next Christmas. Sandip Ray is very hopeful about Abir Chatterjee. Sandip thinks that only Abir can fit the vacant place of Sabyasachi Chakraborty. Sandip ray has a long term planning with Abir Chatterjee. Sandip Ray thinks that Abir’s age will permit him to play the role of Feluda for at least 7-8 years.

Next project of Sandip Ray – a film on ghosts

Eminent filmmaker Sandip Ray was toying with the idea of making a film on ‘Bhoot’ – ghosts. Actually Sandip Ray wanted to make a film on ghosts before making Royal Bengal Rahasay but due to some reasons he had to postponed the idea.

Now Sandip Ray is prepared to make a Bengali film on ghosts after lot of studies and viewing many ghost films of old days. The ultimate outcome is that Sandip Ray has selected four short stories on ghosts, 3 of Satyajit Ray and one story of Sharadindu Bandopadhyay. The four stories will be merged into one film. The title of the film is not yet decided and the film will not be a typical horror film. Shooting of the film will start on 5 August and Sandip Ray hopes that the film will be released by December this year.

The three stories from Satyajit Ray’s work are Anathbabur Bhoy, Brown Shaheber Bari and Lucknower Duel. The fourth story is Bhoot Bhobishyot and it is written by Sharadindu Bandopadhyay. Sandip Ray has decided the shooting locations as follows:

Anathbabur Bhoy and Bhoot Bhobishyot  will be shot in Bolpur. Brown Shaheber Bari will be shot in Kalimpong and Lucknower Duel will be shot  in Lucknow.

Saswata Chatterjee will play the role of a writer in Bhoot Bhobishyot . Paran Bandopadhyay will play Tarini Khuro. Abir Chatterjee, Dwijen Bandopadhyay and Biswajit Chakraborty will be in Brown Shaheber Bari. Other actors and actresses are yet to be finalized.
