Jogen Chowdhury-eminent painter of West Bengal


Jogen Chowdhury, the eminent painter of India born in 1939 in Faridpur District of present Bangladesh. Jogen Choudhury’s father Pramatnath Chowdhury was a Brahmin zamindar. Both his parents were interest in art. His father was a painter and also sculpted various Hindu icons. His mother was an expert in Alpana drawings. From 1939 to 1947 Jogen Chowdhury lived in East Bengal, presently Bangladesh and just before partition they shifted to Kolkata.
His art of unbroken line is the hallmark of Jogen Choudhury’s paintings, which he learned from his mother.


Jogen Chowdhuri  is a graduate from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata. After his graduation he started his career as an art teacher. Jogen Chowdhuri also worked in a Handloom House as a designer. He studied at Ecole des Beaux Art, Paris also.  After returning to India, he joined as the curator of the art collection at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi in 1972.   
Jogen Choudhuri works mostly in oil, water colours and ink.


In 1975, he along with some leading painters of Delhi founded Gallery 26 and Artist's Forum. He has participated in several exhibitions in India and abroad.


Jogen Choudhury now lives and works in Santiniketan.
