Jangipur Lok Sabha by-election on 10 October 2012



By-election of JangipurLok Sabha seat which is presently vacant will be on 10 October 2012. The seat is vacant as Pranab Mukherjee resigned from the seat. Pranab Mukherjee is the present President of India. Pranab Mukherjee won the Jangipur Lok Sabha seat twice, in 2004 and 2009.


CPI (M) has announced their candidate for the Jangipur by-election, Mujaffar Hossen is the CPI (M) candidate. Hossen is a CPI (M) state committee member from Murshidabad. He is the general secretary of the West Bengal Adivasi O Lokoshilpi Sansad. In 1996, Hossen contested the assembly election against Adhir Ranjan Choudhury and was defeated.


Important dates related to the Jangipur by-election


Last date for filing nomination: 22 September 2012

Last date for withdrawal of nominations: 26 September 2012.

Result of Jangipur by-election: 13 October 2012.

It is expected that Trinamool Congress will not field its candidate for the Jangipur by-election. Abhijit Mukherjee, son of President Pranab Mukherjee and sitting MLA of Nalhati has expressed his desire to contest from Jangipur. Congress is yet to announce their candidate’s name.
