Live telecast of Belur Math Durga Puja in 2011

This article holds the timings of live telecast of Belur Math Durga Puja in 2011. DD Bangla will telecast the Durga Puja 2011 at Belur Math this year.

Durga Puja is the most famous festival of West Bengal and Bengalis residing outside West Bengal.  Many Durga Puja organisers experiment with new ideas every year. New themes, new concepts are observed every year. Huge pandals with attractive lightings, everything are to attract visitors. Durga Puja at Belur Mathdo not need all this decorative works to attract visitors in their Durga Puja.  Viewing  Kumari Puja, Sandhi Puja at Belur Math is something different from all other Pujas. People come from distant places to Belur Math during Durga Puja every year but It is not possible for everybody to be personally present in Belur Math during Durga Puja. Like every year, live telecast of Belur Math Durga Puja will be done. DD Bangla tv channel will telecast the Durga Puja and the live telecast timings are given below:

Mahashashti, 2 October 2011 (Sunday):  Live telecast from 8.30 pm to 9.00 pm.

Mahasaptami, 3 October 2011 (Monday):  Live telecast from 6.02 am to 6.45 am, 7.30 am to 8.15 am, 9.15 am to 9.45 am and 10.46 am to 11.15 am.

Mahashtami, 4 October 2011 (Tuesday):  Live telecast from 7.40 am to 8.00 am. Kumari Puja at Belur Math will be telecasted from 9.05 am to 9.50 am and Sandhi Puja will be telecasted from 8.14 pm to 9.02 pm.

Mahanavami,5 October 2011 (Wednesday):  Live telecast from 5.45 am to 6.15 am, 7.40 am to 8.00 am, 9.15 am to 10.45 am and from 2.30 pm to 2.55 pm.

Vijaya Dashami,6 October 2011 (Thursday):  Darpan Visarjan will be telecasted  from 8.30 am to 9.00 am and from 9.05 am to 9.30 am. Immersion will be telecasted from 6.30 pm to 7.00 pm.

Kumari Puja on Mahashtami of Durga Puja

This article is on Kumari Puja on the day of Mahashtami of Durga Puja and the reason behind Kumari Puja.

On the Mahashtami morning, an important ritual is performed which is known as Kumari Puja. During the Durga Puja days, Goddess Durga is worshiped in different forms. On the Dashami day, Maa Durga is treated as a daughter. Among the different forms of Maa Durga, one form is of a ‘Kumari’ means young virgin girl.

According to Hindu believes, Kumari Puja is performed to emphasize the purity and divinity of women in our society. In our society women are yet to get the same status as men and this is not the phenomenon of recent time, it is continuing from time immemorial. We Indians worship Goddess Durga, Kali, Laxmi more than any other God still the women in our society are ill treated. On many occasions our society blames women without any reason, raise question about their purity. Kumari Puja is a symbolic against all these blames on women.

Sri Ramkrishna Paramhans, the great saint worshipped Sarada Maa, his wife as Kumari on a Durga Puja. Swami Vivekananda described Sarada Maa as ‘living Durga’.

For the Kumari Puja in Mahastami of Durga Puja, a young girl who is yet to reach her puberty is selected. In the early morning of Mahashtami, the girl will take bath in holy Ganga water and is clad in a saree, preferably a red Benarasi. The little girl takes all kind of make up, flowers, jewellery, sindoor, alta are used. During the Kumari Puja, the girl will sit before Goddess Durga and the priest perform puja on the girl. Hindus believe that after the Kumari Puja is over, the divinity of Maa Durga is found on the girl.

Kumari Puja in Belur Math is worth seeing. Swami Vivekananda performed Kumari Puja  in Belur Math for the first time in 1902 where he worshiped nine Kumari girls, offered Pushpanjali at their feet, touched their feet at the end of Puja.

Sandhi Puja of Mahashtami in Durga Puja

Sandhi Puja is one of the most important ritual of Mahashtami in Durga Puja. Sandhi Puja is performed at the juncture of Mahashtami and Mahanavami. Sandhi Puja starts when there is only 24 minutes left in Mahashtami and continues upto first 24 minutes of Mahanavami.  Sandhi Puja is considered as very tough from the point of views of Pujaris and only experienced Pujaris can perform the Puja properly. The time during which the Sandhi Puja continues is known as ‘Sandhikshan’. In Sandhi Puja Maa Durga is worshipped in her Chamunda form. Among different forms of Goddess Durga, Chamunda is an angry form. It is said that Devi Durga killed two demons, Chanda and Munda in this time.

The Sandhi Puja is performed amidst beats of Dhak, sound of conch shells and bells. Sacrifice is also very important part of Sandhi Puja. Mostly buffalos and goats are sacrificed during Sandhi Puja. In many Sandhi Puja, vegetables like pumpkin, banana etc are sacrificed instead of animals. 108 lotus flowers are required to perform Sandhi Puja. 108 diyas-earthen lamps are lighted during Sandhi Puja.  Sandhi Pujas in different old house hold Durga Pujas are worth seeing.

With the end of Sandhi Puja, Mahanavami starts.

Time schedule of Durga Puja 2011 is as follows

Maha Sasti:  14 Ashwin, 2 October – Sunday. Bodhon starts in the evening and ends at the next day ( 3 October) at 4.28 AM. 

Maha Saptami: 15 Ashwin, 3 October – Monday. ‘Naba Patrika’ should be completed within 10.18 AM. Maha Saptami will continue upto 2.22 AM of 4 October. 

Maha Ashtami: 16 Ashwin, 4 October – Tuesday. Maha Ashtami  puja within 10.18 AM and Maha Ashtami will continue upto 1.15 AM of 5 October. 

Sandhi Puja: Starts after 12.51 AM of 5 October and completes before 1.39 AM of 5 October. Sacrifice at 1.05 AM. 

Maha Nabami: 17 Ashwin, 5 October – Wednesday. Maha Nabami will continue upto 12.35 AM of 6 October. 

Bijaya Dashami: 18 Ashwin, 6 October – Thursday. Bijaya Dashami will continue upto 12.23 AM of 7 October.
