Tarapith is a holy religious place of West Bengal situated in a village Tarapur, near the Dwaraka river and famous Bamdev Shangha Ashram. Tarapith is under Rampurhat Sub-Division Birbhum district. The famous Tara Ma temple of Tarapith attracts lot of tourists every day.
Why the name is Tarapith
Tarapith is one of the Sakthi Pithas in India. The name Tarapith means sitting place of Goddess Tara. Hindu mythology explains that eye ball of Sati had fallen here. There are many people who believe that Sage Basistha here worshipped the Goddes Sati in the form of Tara.
Tarapith is a famous Hindu pilgrimage destination, thousands of devotees and tourists visit this place daily.
Tarapith is also famous for the great ‘mad saint’ Bamakhepa. It is believed that Bamakhepa sat in meditation near the famous burning ground in Tarapith and got the ‘darshan’ of Maa Tara.
